Alamosa resident Sam Michael Mascarenas, 69, was called home on April 13, 2023. Sam was welcomed into the world on June 17, 1953, in Alamosa, Colo., the son of Danny Mascarenas and Valda Vigil Mascarenas.

After he finished his schooling, Sam enlisted and served in the United States Navy. He completed his time in the service, was honorably discharged and lived out his days as a truck driver for Tony Buhr. He loved being on the open road.

In his free time, Sam enjoyed going fishing, playing dominos, going camping and hunting. He also enjoyed doing mechanics for his family and loved spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his daughters Samantha Mascarenas, Sandy (Daniel) Choman both of Alamosa, Colo.; Sara (Chuy) Martinez-Gallegos of San Antonino, Texas; son Samson (Maria) Mascarenas of Del Norte, Colo.; 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister Dorothy Mascarenas of Taos, N.M.; brothers Jimmy (Phyllis) Mascarenas of Alamosa, Colo.; Dennis Mascarenas of Taos, N.M.; and ex-wife Pearl Ford of Alamosa, Colo. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, son Samuel Mascarenas, first wife Mary Sandoval and both sets of grandparents.

Vigil Service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 9:30 a.m., Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10 a.m., both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Interment will follow at the Alamosa Cemetery with full military honors.
