SANFORD – The Sanford High School girls basketball team led from start to finish in its game against Crested Butte Friday at the SHS gym with the Lady Mustangs winning by a score of 46-23.
Sanford took off to an early 8-0 lead on a pair of baskets by Brooklynn Reynolds and one basket each by Riley Willett and Shasta Bond. Annie Collins put the Lady Titans on the board, but Bond scored a layup and added a free throw for an 11-2 advantage.
Collins scored another basket but Claire Crowther drove for a layup. After another Collins basket, Makynlee Faucette tallied a layup and a free throw for a 16-6 Sanford lead at the end of the first quarter.
Reynolds and Willett scored the first two baskets in the second quarter, but Collins scored three points and Molly Grace Miller scored two to bring the Lady Titans within 20-11. Reynolds got another layup and added a free throw, and after another Miller basket, Avery Koenig scored a layup, and Brinlyn Smith drained a 3-point basket for a 28-13 lead.
Miller scored another basket for Crested Butte but the Lady Mustangs scored the final five points of the period with Reynolds and Smith both scoring two points and Sadie Caldon scoring one and Sanford led 33-15 at halftime.
Miller scored the first basket of the third quarter, but Smith drove for a layup and Reynolds buried a three. Faucette made one of two from the free throw line, but Miller did the same and the Lady Mustangs had a 39-18 advantage at the end of the period.
Crowther scored five points in the fourth quarter and Bond scored two.
Reynolds led Sanford in scoring with 14 points, followed by Smith, Crowther and Bond with seven apiece.
Collins was Crested Butte’s top scorer with 12 points and Miller added 11.
Sanford (10-4, 1-1 Southern Peaks League) will travel to Trinidad today. The first game begins at 3 p.m.
