Test results: How SLV schools compare

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The results of the Colorado Measures for Academic Success testing were recently released by the Colorado Department of Education.
Around 550,000 students were assessed statewide, with third through eighth grades tested in math, and language arts. The science assessment was given to fifth, eighth and 11th grades.
Overall statewide, 44.5 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in language arts and math, reflecting 2.2 percent change from the 2017 percentage. In math, 34.1 percent of the students tested statewide met or exceeded expectations, which represented a 1.3-percent improvement between 2017 and 2018. The statewide percentage of those who met or exceeded expectations in science was 31.2 percent, a .4 percent improvement over the previous year.
The following statistics reflect how San Luis Valley schools compare:
Alamosa — 35 percent of all students in the grades tested in the Alamosa schools (1,072 students included in the test results) met or exceeded expectations in English language arts, 22.8 percent in mathematics and 22.3 percent in science (481 students included in science test results.) These testing results reflected a positive improvement of 2 percent in both English language arts and math over the previous year’s results and a -2.6 percent change in science test results compared to 2017.

Center — Overall 36.3 percent of all students tested (267 students) met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts, a 5-percent improvement from 2017 to 2018; and 16.9 percent in mathematics, a 7.5 percent improvement. The science test results for Center (126 students included in results) reflected 12.1 percent who met or exceeded expectations, a -1.5 difference between 2017 and 2018.

Creede — In the English Language Arts component, about 26 percent of the students tested (27 students) met or exceeded expectations, -15 percent difference from the previous year; 18.5 percent in math, -4.6 from the previous year; and 19 percent in science (22 students included in the testing total.)

Del Norte— Overall 26 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts (174 students tested) and 16.2 percent in mathematics, -1.5 difference between 2017 and 2018, and in science (106 students included in results) 22.2 percent met or exceeded expectations, a -6.4 percent difference from the previous year.

Monte Vista — About 26 percent of all students in the grades tested in the Monte Vista schools (478 students included in the test results) met or exceeded expectations in English language arts, a 2.2-percent improvement over the previous year; 20.2 percent in mathematics, a 5.7 percent improvement over last year; and 17.3 percent in science (261 students included in science test results), 1 percent improvement from the previous year.

Sargent — In Sargent, 42.6 percent of the students tested (181 students) met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts, a -3.6 percent change from the previous year; 23.3 percent in math, -2.9 percent between 2017 and 2018; and 39.1 percent in science (89 students included), a 14.1 percent improvement from the previous year.
