Three local performers compete at NHSFR on Monday morning

ALAMOSA – The National High School Finals Rodeo got underway on Sunday. No local youth cowboys and cowgirls competed on Sunday, but three participated on Monday morning.

The rodeo is taking place in Gillette, Wyo.

Tylee DeHerrera of La Jara and Kaysen Shahan of Pagosa Springs had the fifth best time in team roping on Monday morning in 9.38 seconds. They are 11th in the first go-round as of the Monday morning performance.

Klayt Staudt of Saguache had his first run in boys cutting on Monday morning, scoring 62 points. He tied for 14th in the performance and he is tied for 29th overall.

Cayden Schulz competed in steer wrestling but did not record a time.

All three locals will have their second run on Friday evening.

Ben Sittler of Monte Vista was scheduled to have his first bull ride on Monday evening, while Staudt and his partner Rett Coors of Loveland will compete for the first time in team roping on Tuesday morning.

The NHSFR will run through Saturday evening.
