Alamosa boys defeat Gunnison; Centauri scores win over La Junta

ALAMOSA – The ASU Classic began Friday at the Alamosa High School gym with both local teams recording victories.

Centauri took a 58-37 win from La Junta, and Alamosa rolled to a 55-28 win over Gunnison.

Alamosa 55, Gunnison 28

The Mean Moose got off to a fast start as they scored the first 10 points of the game. Gunnison got on the board with a 3-point basket, but Alamosa scored the final six points of the period to take a 16-3 advantage.

The Mean Moose continued their hot streak into the second quarter as the scored the first 14 points of the period. The Cowboys scored the final two points of the quarter, but Alamosa led 30-5.

Alamosa continued the run into the third quarter and it took its largest lead of the game at 42-7 with 2:50 left in the period. The Cowboys outscored the Mean Moose 10-2 in the final 1:26 of the period, but Alamosa had a 44-17 advantage.

Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Brant Jackson led Alamosa in scoring with 14 points, followed by Victor Zepeda with 13.

Burke O’Rourke was Gunnison’s top scorer with 12 points.

Centauri 58, La Junta 37

The Falcons scored the first six points of the game before the Tigers got on the board with a 3-point basket by Monzee Alvidrez. Centauri increased the lead to12-5, but La Junta scored back-to-back threes to close within 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Chaz Holman scored the first five points of the second quarter. The Falcons took a 29-21 advantage into halftime.

The Falcons continued their momentum into the third quarter as they increased the margin to 46-25. The Tigers outscored Centauri 7-2 in the final 90 seconds of the third quarter, but the Falcons still led 48-32.

The Falcons took their largest lead of the game at 58-35 with 1:07 left in the game

Carson Bagwell was Centauri’s leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Holman with 12.

Alvidrez led La Junta with 15 points, followed by Ethan Leyba with 14.

The tournament comes to a close today with Centauri (3-2) playing Gunnison at 11:30 a.m., and Alamosa (4-2) taking on La Junta at 2:30 p.m.
