APD chief quits during council meeting, hands badge to mayor

ALAMOSA - Alamosa Police Chief Ken Anderson shocked a standing-room-only crowd at Wednesday’s city council meeting when, following a statement reiterating why he was resigning from the force after 23 years, he handed his badge to Mayor Ty Coleman, making his departure effective immediately.

Anderson had initially submitted his resignation to City Manager Heather Sanchez last week, citing her lack of respect for his professional opinion and disregard for the impact city initiatives were having on the city’s police department. At that time, Anderson had committed to staying into December, but an interview with Sanchez where she said he was “untruthful” in his claims accelerated his decision to leave the department.
