Balloons, candy and horses. It’s 4th of July!

“Biggest parade so far”

ALAMOSA — Parents, kids and dogs were lined up along both sides of Main Street on Thursday morning, scooping up the candy (not the dogs) and cheering as they watched Alamosa’s annual Fourth of July parade.

Adams State University President David Tandberg and Alamosa Mayor Ty Coleman judged the 29 entries that walked, rolled or trotted past, ultimately awarding Big John’s Furniture Warehouse first place and SLV Health second place with third place going to Evergreen Nursing Home.

Overseen by Young Professionals of America, President Meredith McCarn said Thursday’s parade was the biggest one for the group so far. But Thursday’s festivities were just the beginning. Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday night, July 5, there will be a “Block Party for America” with live music, brews, games and more on San Juan Avenue.

“The Young Professionals of America proudly oversee the annual Fourth of July parade and block party to foster community spirit, celebrate our nation’s independence and showcase local businesses and organizations,” McCarn says. “YPA is dedicated to engaging the community through vibrant events that unite residents, promote local businesses and highlight Alamosa’s unique culture.”

She also gave a big shout out to the event sponsors, including the City of Alamosa, San Luis Valley Pet Care, High Peak Event Company, Big John’s Furniture Warehouse, SLV REC, 1st Southwest Bank, Horning Insurance Agency, Garcia Auto, O&V Printing, Alamosa Home, SLV Health, SLV Federal Bank, Alamosa Home, Square Peg, Sand Dunes Recreation, Wall, Smith, Bateman, CHFA,  The Rolling Blue Chip and Maya S.
