Firefighters called to familiar site

ALAMOSA — Alamosa firefighters were called to a familiar location on the extreme southeast edge of town early Wednesday morning, April 19, where a garage, well house, their contents and a wooden fence were destroyed by fire. Driven by strong winds out of the southwest, the blaze moved into a pile of railroad ties.

Alamosa Fire Department Capt. Zach Cerny said the cause of the fire at 8201 County Road 110 (Old Airport Road) is undetermined and noted that the department has been dispatched to that location numerous times since an April 17, 2018, fire destroyed the home there, almost five years to the day of Wednesday’s conflagration.

Firefighters were summoned about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday and found the well house and garage fully involved in flame.

Cerny, who was incident commander on scene, said two homes north of the blaze were evacuated for fear the wind could drive the fire to them. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were on scene for about 3 ½ hours. Alamosa Fire had six trucks and 18 personnel on scene with mutual aid from Monte Vista Fire providing two trucks and six firefighters.
