Mean Moose golfers start season with fifth-place finish at Cortez

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys golf team began the 2024 season as it competed at the Montezuma-Cortez Invitational Thursday at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.

The Mean Moose finished in fifth place with a score of 269 strokes.

Leading Alamosa was Serjio Najera who placed 16th with an 85. Kobe Mizokami was next with an 89 to finish 21st, Gibson Gillespie was 25th with a 95, and Brady Van Iwarden was 30th with a 99.

Durango won the tournament with 228. Montezuma-Cortez was second with 238, the Durango second team was third with 242, and the Durango third team placed fourth with 249.

Telluride finished sixth with 287, Woodland Park was seventh with 293 and Pagosa Springs was eighth with 304.

Pagosa’s Johnathon Smith was the medalist with an even par 72. Durango’s Drew Jepson was a stroke behind in second place.

Alamosa will next compete at the Durango Invitational on Saturday. Its home tournament will be on Aug. 16 at Cattails Golf Course.

Del Norte, Monte Vista to begin seasons next week

The other two SLV boys golf teams will begin their seasons early next week.

Monte Vista will compete at the Swink Invitational on Monday which will take place at the La Junta Municipal Golf Course. Both Monte Vista and Del Norte will be at the Fowler Invitational at the Cottonwood Links on Tuesday.

Both teams will also be at the Alamosa Invitational.
