Susan Mary Sommer, 77, of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away peacefully on Aug. 9, 2024.

Born in Kirkwood, Mo., on Feb. 20, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Celeste Sommer.

Having obtained her M. Ed. degree from Adams State University, Susan worked most recently as an elementary school teacher. She was passionate about helping children and adults learn to read. Throughout her life, she held many jobs that reflected her diverse interests. They ranged from small business owner to newspaper columnist to coal miner.

She played a variety of musical instruments and sang in a band in her younger years; she was drawn to movies and acting; and she could converse on any subject with a special enthusiasm for sports. Susan loved her family, but above all, she loved Jesus. 

Survivors include daughter Jennifer (Paul) Weiss of Lititz, Pa.; son Gabriel (Tracy) Archard of Salida, Colo.; son Jesse Dessain of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Amy Scavezze of Alamosa, Colo.; daughter Natasha Dessain of Alamosa, Colo.; six grandchildren; sister Judith (Richard) Gerber of St. Louis, Mo.; brother Lee (Karla) Sommer of Rocheport, Mo.; and brother Thomas (Ginny) Sommer of Hinsdale, Ill.

On Aug. 17, a 1 p.m. viewing will be held at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa, Colo., followed by a 2 p.m. graveside service at the Alamosa Cemetery.
