FARMINGTON, N.M. — Former Manassa resident Bernice Martinez went to be with our Lord on May 12, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Bernice was welcomed into the world on July 18, 1934, to the late Juan de Dios Manzanares and Dorothea Martinez Manzanares. On June 12, 1963. she married the love of her life Louis Martinez. The two shared 59 wonderful years of marriage till his passing in December 2022.
The two were blessed with one daughter of their own. Together they had four children. Bernice worked as a teacher for many years in the San Luis Valley as well as New Mexico she also worked for the state of Colorado in the WIC office for several years.
She enjoyed her time reading, painting, sewing, playing the piano and the time she spent with her loving family. Bernice will be missed by all who knew her.
Her legacy will live on through her children: daughter Sylvia Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M., stepdaughter Brenda Smith of Farmington, N.M., son James (Oliva) Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M., stepson Rosendo (Caroline) Martinez of Bloomfield, N.M.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister Connie (Louis) Martinez, two brothers Robert Manzanares, and Ray (Claudia) Manzanares.
Bernice was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years Louis Martinez, parents Juan de Dios and Dorothea Martinez, one sister Pauline Manzanares, and two brothers Mike and Ramos Manzanares.
Celebration of Life for Bernice will be held on May 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Capulin, Colo., with interment to follow at Gomez Cemetery.
