Charlotte Day Matheus August 23, 1924 – June 7, 2018

A woman of great faith in God, devotion to the Episcopal Church and love for others has left us. Charlotte was the third daughter of Dr. Roy Joshua and Mildred (Lymon) Day of Alamosa, Colorado. Her sisters, Jean and Lucille, both preceded her in death, as well as her parents, her first born daughter, Bonnie Jean and her beloved husband, the Rev. Robert “Bob” Matheus.

Charlotte grew up in the mountains of Colorado, graduated from Alamosa High School and then found her way to the mid-west for college. She attended Iowa State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. While there she met Bob at a dance at St. John’s on the Campus (Episcopal). They married on September 18, 1947 and moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where Bob finished his degree in Business at Coe College following his service in WWII.

Upon graduation from Iowa State Charlotte took an internship at the University of Chicago Clinic and began her career which included teaching student nurses, serving as resident Dietician in numerous hospitals and nursing homes, and teaching in the Home Economics Department at Iowa Weslyan College in Mt. Pleasant. When she and Bob retired to Boone, Iowa she was consulting Dietician at two homes, including the Eastern Star Home where she lived until her death. Charlotte was an active member of PEO all her adult life, and was involved in the Red Hat Society for years.

Charlotte’s real passion was her music. As an accomplished cellist she played in numerous community orchestras and musical quartets where ever she lived. An award-winning photograph by her dear friend, Steve O’Brien called “Charlotte’s Devotion” captured her gifted hands while playing the cello. Her cello was her companion in life until she was no longer able play. She gave her instrument to an aspiring cellist, Phyona Schrader of Ankeny, Iowa, and enjoyed watching her advance in her musical gift.

Her surviving family includes Robert Day Matheus (Donna), Richard Louis Matheus (Lori) and Randal John Matheus (Jan); two grandchildren, Allison Rhoades (Brandon) and Kayla Matheus; a step granddaughter, Dana Schmelzer (Nolan); great Granddaughters, Emily and Reiley Jean; nephews, John Matheus (Jeanne) and Jeff Matheus (Donna); and extended family, Charlotte Jean (Valdez) Crites (Robin); Dalene O’Brien (Steve); Goddaughter Katie (O’Brien) Espinoza (Mike) and their newborn son, Elijah; David Patten, Julie Patten (deceased).
