Douglas “Doug” Lee Steward, 63

MONTE VISTA – Douglas “Doug” Lee Steward, (63), died August 10, 2018 in Monte Vista.

Doug was born in Del Norte on Sept. 14, 1954. He graduated from Sterling High School and continued on to receive a BA and MA in Secondary Education from Adams State College.

Doug was married to Karen (Techendorf) Steward from 1978 to 2016.

Doug taught science in middle and high schools for 36 years, he spent 18 years teaching at the Monte Vista High School before his retirement in 2014. He also coached track, football and basketball at Weld Central. Following his retirement, Doug continued to work part-time jobs and prided himself on his work managing the family’s Pinecrest Ranch.

Doug was an outdoor enthusiast, who loved camping, hiking, fishing and backpacking. He made sure that his children and grandchildren all shared in the nature that he loved. He was also able to share his passion for the outdoors through his long-term involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. Doug was also deeply involved with science fair on the local, state and national level. He was also very active with a local Civil War reenactment group.

Doug was preceded in death by his father Jack Steward as well as his grandparents John and Dorothy Adams and Paul and Mildred Steward.

Doug is survived by his children Paul (Toni) Steward, Chris Steward, Amy (Sergio) Salazar; grandchildren Sebastian Steffens and Victoria Salazar; Mother Marty Steward and his siblings David (Carol) Steward and Deb (Gary) Haverfield.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Valley Church of the Nazarene, 228 Madison St., Monte Vista.
