Floraine Wilson

Floraine Wilson, last surviving child of Hubert Smith and Evaline Jack Smith, passed away peacefully May 25, 2019 at the Rio Grande Inn, La Jara.

Floraine was born Feb. 23, 1922 in Manassa, and was one of 10 children. They were all raised in Manassa.

Floraine recalls her childhood as being very happy, riding horses, helping with the animals and learning to cook, garden, canning and sewing.  Floraine loved to dance and laugh.

Floraine met the love of her life, Frank Wilson and they were married August 25, 1944.  From this marriage were born five children.  Ronnie, Jerry, Donald, Lorreta and Perry.  Sadness came to the family when beautiful little Lorreta died at the age of 15 months.

Floraine was a member of the 2nd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Manassa, she fulfilled many callings, including relief society and home visits.

Homemaking was Floraine’s passion, always making sure her family was fed, as well as anyone else who might be hungry.  There always seemed to be enough to go around whoever showed up at the table.

Floraine loved getting together with ladies in the church to make quilts, it’s unimaginable how many they quilted or tied and gave away.

There were probably no better pickles made than the ones by Floraine, along with peaches, jams and canning meat and not to forget the bread rolls she made for every family gathering.

Floraine was very happy when she had a fishing pole in her hand and being with family at the river.

There were many events Floraine looked forward to, the Easter family gathering on the ranch, birthdays, new babies and of course Christmas.  Floraine would start her Christmas shopping in September and make sure every family member received a gift, all would arrive at Floraine’s on Christmas Eve for a bowl of chili and grandma’s gift giving and receiving.  This is a tradition none of us will ever forget.

Floraine is predeceased by her husband, Frank Wilson, her daughter, Loretta, her great grandaughter Carlie and all of her nine siblings.

Floraine is survived by her four sons, Ronnie, Jerry, Donnie (Judy) Wilson, Perry Wilson (Sandra Crook), 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren and special friend Surrey Vigil and Jennie Lee.  And so, the legacy lives on.

Visitation will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Manassa on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 10 a.m. followed by her funeral service at 11 a.m. burial will be at the Manassa Cemetery after the service.
