Longtime San Luis Valley resident Leo Garcia, 91, died Jan. 24, 2024, in Pueblo, Colo.

Leo was born in Buena Vista, N.M., to Apolonio Garcia and Beatriz Montoya Garcia on May 13, 1932.

Leo worked for many years in various places in and around the San Luis Valley in Farming and throughout Colorado and New Mexico in Mining. He loved collecting mining rocks, old money, and coins.

His most favorite past-time was spending time with his friends and family. He also enjoyed fishing and travelling. He was a musician and played the guitar and sang old New Mexico music.

Leo is survived by his children Eva (Bernard) Arellano of Pueblo, Colo., Jerry Garcia of Mora, N.M., and Jovita (Demcy) Romero of Mora, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter Leilani Rose Castillo; his sisters Mary Jane McNabb of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jenny Gallegos of Mora, N.M.; his friend who he considered an adopted son Ronnie Vigil; a special friend Renee Hedinger; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Rosana Garcia, his second wife Ruth “Rita” Garcia, his children: Margie Sandoval, Alex Garcia, Roger Martinez, and Billy Martinez; and his grandchildren Shannon Dova Martinez and Demcy Romero, Jr.

A visitation will be held at the Rogers Family Mortuary on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, from 4-7 p.m., and 9-9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial, all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Interment will follow services in the San Luis Valley Cemetery in Monte Vista.
