Zapata resident Robert L. Schultz, 75, passed away Aug. 15, 2023, at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, Colo.

Robert was born in Montana on Jan. 8, 1948, to Leon and Maureen Schultz.

Robert worked for the State of Colorado as the Water Commissioner for over 15 years, and he truly loved his job. He was also a park ranger at Yellowstone National Park, that’s where he met the love of his life Kathleen (Downey) Schultz who was also a park ranger, and they were married just out of the park at the Soldiers Chapel on June 10, 1970.  They were married for 53 wonderful years. Robert also worked as a ranger at the Sand Dunes National Park.

Robert loved to spend time with his family. He loved to talk about water. Robert was a hard worker and dedicated much of his life to work.

Robert is survived by his wife Kathleen; his sons Terek (Tammy) Schultz of Ashville, Ohio, and Keith (Tanya) Schultz of Mosca, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by both his father Leon Schultz, his mother Maureen Schultz, his father-in-law Charles Downy, and his mother-in-law Dora Downey.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
