MANASSA – Eda Rae Johnson, a woman of creativity and devotion, passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2024, in La Jara, Colo. Born on Jan. 2, 1934, in Ely, Nev., Eda's life was a tapestry of love, art, and faith that touched the hearts of everyone she knew. Her 90 years of life were rich with experiences and relationships that reflected her passionate, creative, and faith-filled spirit.

Eda's journey began as the cherished daughter of Lewis Mattice and Mary Lasca (Boise) Mattice. She grew up surrounded by the love of family, including her late brothers and sister, and her dear brother Walt Mattice of Yerington, Nev. Her early years in the vibrant landscapes of Nevada instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for nature's beauty, which would later become a central theme in her artwork.

On Dec. 9, 1950, Eda married her soulmate, Rex Johnson, and together they embarked on an incredible love story that would have marked its 74th anniversary later this year. Eda and Rex's union was a testament to true companionship, and they filled their years with adventures, traveling the world and creating a legacy of love that would extend through multiple generations.

Eda's passion for art was not just a hobby but a vital part of her being. Her paintings and crafts were not merely objects of beauty but expressions of her soul. She shared this gift generously, teaching painting to various groups over her lifetime. Eda became renowned for her exquisite card making, which graced numerous special occasions with a personal touch that was uniquely hers.

Her commitment to service was evident in her roles as a foster parent and scout leader, where she guided and nurtured countless young lives with love and loyalty. Eda's faith was the cornerstone of her existence, and she loved her church family dearly. She dedicated herself to serving others, and this was most palpable in the numerous meals she helped prepare for those in her faith community.

Family was the heart of Eda's world. She is survived by her devoted children: Janis (Tim) Snyder of La Junta, Colo., Randall (Peggy) Johnson of Alamosa, Colo., Timothy (Kathleen) Johnson of Alamosa, Colo., Kris (Matt Knapp) Johnson of Essex Junction, Vt., and Donna Herod of Wright, Wyo. Eda's legacy continues to bloom through her 10 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, each of whom carry a piece of her spirit and creativity.
